Protecting What We Love: Supporting Surfers Against Sewage

Being rooted in local communities means we care deeply about the places we live and work. When it comes to choosing charities to support, we look for those making a real impact on the ground – or in this case, the ocean. We are proud to announce that our chosen charity this year is Surfers Against Sewage (SAS). We have already kicked things off with a successful charity event in partnership with Esya Collective, where we held a raffle with prizes generously donated by our amazing Pixel members and our neighbours at Rosewall Bakery. Together, we raised a whopping £474!

Next up: Our Christmas Market! We are currently organising our Pixel Christmas Market in support of SAS. If you’d like to contribute, you can donate here

Who Are Surfers Against Sewage?

Founded in a small Cornish village in 1990, Surfers Against Sewage began as a grassroots movement of ocean lovers frustrated by pollution in the water. What started as a campaign to stop raw sewage being dumped in the sea has evolved into a nationwide environmental mission. Today, SAS fights to protect the UK’s oceans, rivers, and waterways from plastic pollution, sewage, climate change, and environmental injustice. They empower communities, schools, individuals, and businesses to be part of the solution – through education, activism, and action. From holding polluters accountable to organizing beach cleans and lobbying for policy change, SAS is always on the front line.

Why It Matters to Us.

We love the sea. Many of our Forward team and members are surfers, swimmers, paddleboarders, or just coastal wanderers. Keeping the ocean clean and thriving is more than just a good cause; it directly impacts our lives and the places we call home. But it’s also about the bigger picture: tackling the climate crisis, protecting biodiversity, and ensuring that everyone, no matter where they live, has access to a healthy environment.

A Few Things SAS Are Up To:
  • Plastic-Free Communities: Supporting towns and cities across the UK to ditch single-use plastics.
  • Ocean Activism: From grassroots campaigns to political lobbying, SAS pushes for cleaner water and corporate accountability.
  • The Million Mile Clean: A bold campaign to mobilise 1 million volunteers to clean 1 million miles of the UK’s coastlines, rivers, streets, and green spaces.
  • Youth & Education Programs: Empowering young people with the knowledge and tools to become ocean activists themselves.
  • SAS Annual Ball: Bringing together local communities to learn, celebrate, and support the cause by the sea.

How Can You Get Involved?

This October, take the Dip a Day Challenge, brave a cold water dip every day to raise vital funds and help end sewage pollution in our rivers and seas. Other ways to make a splash:

  • Join a beach or river clean or even host your own!
  • Donate to support crucial environmental campaigns.
  • Get your town involved through the Plastic-Free Communities initiative.
  • Follow the movement on Instagram and stay updated via their website.

A cleaner ocean starts with us and there’s no better time to dive in.
